Long-term Hostel Receptionist/Barman

Mango Tree Hostel
Expired
Rio de Janiero
Full Time

Website: www.mangotreehostel.com

Application: (expired)

We are looking for someone who at least has a grasp of Portuguese and some hospitality or service oriented background to work in our hostel in Ipanema. Have a look at our website www.mangotreehostel.com. What we are offering is:-
  • Your dorm bed worth approximately R$1500 per month, in a room with one other backpacker worker. Breakfast.
  • Inclusion in the commission pool on tours sold.
  • Use of our laundry.
You will also be able to go on some of our tours such as the football and favela tours, and for discounts on things like hang gliding and rock climbing. We need to stress that this is not a job as such. It is a position that allows a long-term traveller the ability to stay in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, while maybe improving their portuguese and not eating into their budget. Visas are usually for 3 months with a 3 month extension available. We are not sponsoring work visas, paying for flights or paying a salary. Your work would involve working reception where you would take bookings, field phone enquiries, check-in and check-out, organising what rooms and beds the cleaners need to attend to, sell tours and answer any questions asked by guests. There would also be a couple of shifts in the bar which is only open 6:00pm-10:00pm, and is not open Mondays to Thursdays. As the hostel can only sleep a maximum of 57 people it is not terribly demanding, and the busiest shift is always the morning check-out period. You have to be a friendly, sociable person who gets along easily with people. We are not nearly as formal as a hotel reception here, so you need to be comfortable passing on your knowledge to those who are new in town. This is why the position is suited to long term travellers, people who have travelled extensively, or have lived in several countries. You would not have to work every day, but some days would be only 5 hours and some 10 hours. You would definitely get at least one day off, or more if you are happy to do a couple of double shifts per week. There would be 1-2 morning shifts per week from 7:30-12:30, the rest would be afternoon (12:00-17:00 ) or evening (17:00 – 22:00 for reception, 17:30 – 22:30 for the bar ). Shifts are 5 hours unless you do a back to back to get more days off. The total hours per week will be around 35 hours. We are looking for someone to commit for a minimum of 2 months, but are welcome to work longer if they want.
