Application: (expired)
in a rural Nicaraguan community while carrying a sustainable development project as part of a multicultural team.
If you are aged 18-25 this is your chance to spend 10-12 weeks living overseas. You will be part of a team of UK and local volunteers and empower people in a rural community to create lasting change. You will develop hard and soft transferable skills that can be used in the future
.
You don’t need cash or qualifications to take part, just the ambition to make a difference. Raleigh ICS will change your life and the lives of others.
About ICS:
The Department for International Development funds ICS – representing a significant investment
by the UK government in young people because it believes in the power of youth to bring about positive change in some of the poorest communities around the world, and that by creating thousands of active citizens we can shape the future for the better.
ICS FACT 98% of ICS volunteers recommend ICS as a way to develop skills for employment
What will I be doing?
You will help to improve people’s access to safe water and sanitation. These are often referred to as our ‘WASH’ placements – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
Or you will support young people to set up local businesses and enterprises. These are normally called our livelihoods placements.
How?
Listen – you will get to know the communities, find out what problems they are facing and how to find solutions together.
Talk – you will work
with individuals, youth groups, or whole communities to build their skills, knowledge and change attitudes.
Show – you will run awareness raising sessions and training workshops to inspire people to change behaviours.
Work hard – days will be busy. We don’t give up until we get the job done, whether that is running an awareness raising event in a school or setting up a women’s group. You’ll be learning lots too.
You won’t be alone. You will be in a team of volunteers and supported by team leaders. You will work
alongside people in the community, as well as a local project partner – someone from the local organisation that we work
with – and our staff will always be on hand. Working
side by side, you will create impact together.
You can only be an ICS volunteer on one project cycle so this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
